Connect with Other Bodies

In these exercises, you will move from the internal, private exploration of what matters to your mind, body, and spirit to connecting with others. By doing this, you will begin to make your dreams and desires more concrete; you will move from thought to action. In this way, we practice Earth Joy Writing with the people around us, and our co-creative process becomes supported by and made real within a community.

~

Choose a friend or loved one with whom you will share your vow about what matters in your life. You can do it formally, over a nice meal—or simply, by lighting a candle and dialing her phone number. Let the conversation go where it needs to go. Ask for help in some concrete way if you need it. (Remember, we all need it.) And offer, in turn, to listen when she is ready to make a similar vow to what matters in her life. When the conversation is done, spend a minute reconnecting to your own heart, your own breath, your own rhythm. Do something nurturing and gentle for yourself.

~

Think of a group of people that supports you: It could be your family, or a faith-based or community group, or a few friends—or perhaps you decide you want to bring together a few people who have never met together before. Spend some time planning and deciding with whom you want to do this exercise, but remember that the exercise itself will do the work of Earth Joy Writing with the group in organic ways.

Decide who will be the leader of the group. The leader’s role is to ask each individual to answer the following questions, one at a time, moving in a circle, everyone attentive and listening, not interrupting, letting each person speak but not letting one person—including the leader—dominate the speaking time. One nice way to do this is to take a stone (which comes from the earth and reminds us to be grounded and aware of what is around us) and let each speaker hold the stone while he or she is talking, then pass it to the next person.

Only when each person in the group has answered all the questions should discussions begin. This allows for a diversity of answers to be honored before the individuals become part of the collective group energy.

Here are the questions:

Leader: What matters to you?

Each person, beginning with the person to the leader’s left, answers for a few minutes while the rest of the group listens attentively. The leader answers last.

Leader: What do you already have in your life that will help you commit more fully to what matters to you?

Each person, beginning with the person to the leader’s left, answers for a few minutes while the rest of the group listens attentively. The leader answers last.

Leader: What help do you need in order to commit to what matters to you?

Each person, beginning with the person to the leader’s left, answers for a few minutes while the rest of the group listens attentively.
